TELL YOUR STORY

Five Storytelling Beats

Where Are You?

I am with my dying husband as his community—our community—gathered to create and hold a loving space for Scott and each other

Why Are You There?

Scott was bedbound, in his final days

What Happened in This Moment?

I put out the call to Scott’s nearest & dearest, who put out the call to others, letting everyone know that our home & hearts were open to all, 24/7.

People came, and stayed, and poured love & support on Scott, and me, and each other.

On Thursday, June 5th, 2025, I knew it was the day Scott would pass (we all did), so we asked his hospice nurse to play & sing Hallelujah while we ritualistically bathed him as a group, shared a blessing of bread & wine over him, painted his toenails bright blue (cosmic Scotty blue), and held hangs and sang Elvis’s Can’t Help Falling in Love as he took is last breath and was released into joy.

What Changed for you because of this moment?

Love is the bond that holds us together. Love is the thread the fates use to weave us together — to bind us, but we don’t always know we are bound until the weaving shifts & tightens and we feel the bond. EVERYONE who was in our home the last week of Scott’s life are bound together forever.

Why Does Your Memory Hold On To This Moment?

Scott’s (and my) community came when called, linked arms & hearts, and forged a life-long bond that carried Scott home & will carry all of us forever. It was a profound experience & I am profoundly changed.
